Islip Friends of the Arts began as Friends of Music in the mid-1970’s. The group offered support to the Music Department, assisting backstage during the musical each year, as well as set up and clean up for Sentimental Journey (today this event is The Blue Note Café).
The Islip Friends of the Arts core group has been consistently made up of 3 or 4 people since the mid ‘90’s. The last few years MaryK Schmalacker is our Treasurer, Myrill Solaski is our Vice President and myself, Barbara Engels, President.
As our last child graduated from Islip High School years ago it is now time for us to take a secondary position. Community Members who currently have children interested in Music, Art and Theatre, are needed to become involved. We plan to remain with the group for several years at least, welcoming fresh ideas, as the New Assemblage works to take this group forward into the 2020’s!
Without our organization, Islip Music, Art & Theatre students would miss out on many scholarships and awards granted at the end of each year. The entire school community would lose the cultural arts enrichment programs which we provide. These students give the Islip School Community their talents and touch our hearts when we hear and see what they create.
Will you, maybe with a friend or two, join us as we ready Islip Friends of the Arts to look toward the future?
Thank you, Barbara Engels 631-922-2189
